It is well to note the lessons learned during the era of the Drug Prevention Programs in Higher Education, a division of the Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education, US DOE, which funded institution-wide grants and then grants for prevention consortia, for about a decade starting in 1987. Some of what was learned was that campus prevention programs need to be comprehensive, have top-down buy-in by administration, address institutional denial and "protected classes", address encapsulated subcultures such as some Greek organizations, send many messages, incorporate RA training, training for all campus groups, curriculum infusion of prevention messages, demonstrate that the majority of students are not abusers and don't let abusers set the cultural tone, provide alternative alcohol-free events.

Hari K: Thank you for your question. An excellent resource is the website for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, which has an entire section dedicated to preventing alcohol abuse among college students (www.collegedrinkingprevention.gov). One of the documents on the site is called A Call to Action:Changing the Culture of Drinking at U.S. Colleges, and it outlines various strategies that research has shown to be effective in preventing alcohol abuse among college students.
